Clissett family chairmakers
As many as 17 Clissett family members have given their occupation as “chairmaker” at some time or another. In many cases, this was a life-long profession. While the chairmaking family originated in Worcestershire, they eventually spread elsewhere. Philip and his grandsons made chairs in Bosbury, Herefordshire. Philip's brother, Cyrus, having made chairs in Worcestershire and Herefordshire, moved to Newport, Monmouthshire, during the 1860s, and continued their occupation there. It is not clear, however, whether they continued making West Midlands chair styles, or whether they were absorbed into some local industry.
